“Down Under” by Men at Work

Posted: January 11, 2010 in FROM AUSTRALIA

This song is an Australian favourite from the 1980s. “Down Under” is one of Australia’s nicknames. We also call Australia “Oz”.

In the song there is a reference to one of Australia’s most famous foods-“Vegemite”- a black salty spread which is spread on toast and eaten for breakfast or eaten on a sandwich with butter. Most non-Australian people hate it! There is a similar food in England called “Marmite” but it has a slightly different taste. The students will have an opportunity to try Vegemite in class, let’s see what they think.

Students:

1. Listen to the song. What do you think it is about?

2. Now listen to the song with the lyrics…

3. Go to wikipedia.com/men at work to read about the group and wikipedia.com/Down Under (song) to find out what the song is about
