What is a Healthy Breakfast???

Posted: October 18, 2010 in FROM AUSTRALIA

Hi Everyone!
It’s certainly great to be back and to see you all again.
This week we have “Healthy Breakfast Day” so I have lots of information for you about this topic which I hope you will find interesting and informative.
It is always so good to read your comments and I will give you some questions to think about.
So what do Australians eat for breakfast?
The simple answer is cereal, milk and bread if we think of the items that are mostly consumed, but if you want more detail, here is the real story….
In Australia many people say breakfast is “the most important meal of the day”, so we tend to eat a big breakfast just like in the UK and USA but there are many possibilities and variations in size and ingredients-and this can depend a lot on the weather as in summer it is very hot and in winter it is very cold, so breakfast changes according to this. We often call it “a heavy” breakfast or “a light” breakfast.
Even though I live in Spain, I still eat a big Australian breakfast (heavy or light).
As I said before, there are many options, but here are some typical examples:
1. Fruit salad, with or without yoghurt

2. Pancakes with honey, golden syrup or lemon and sugar (some people eat them with bananas, blueberries or other fruit)

3. Cereal (cornflakes, weet-bix, rice bubbles, muesli..) with milk

4. Sliced toasted bread served with a spread, often Vegemite, peanut butter, jam or marmalade and butter

5. “Bacon and eggs” (bacon is fried and eggs can be fried, scrambled or poached) served with buttered toast and very hungry people can have a “Full English Breakfast” which is bacon and eggs plus:
mushrooms, baked beans, sausages, tomato, toast, hash browns (fried potato cakes) orange juice, coffee, tea…

6. “Smoothie” (a liquid breakfast made by blending together milk, fruit, yoghurt and fruit juice)

7. Porridge (boiled oats in water or milk or both) served with milk and brown sugar or honey

Drinks consumed at breakfast are normally tea, coffee and juice.

My questions for you are:
1. Which Australian breakfast do you prefer?
2. Which breakfasts do you think are heavy? Light?
3. Which breakfast is the healthiest? Unhealthiest?
4. Are there any of the breakfasts you would like to try? Which one/s?
5. Is there any new vocabulary you need to look up in the dictionary?

You can have a look at more photos by typing the breakfast name into “Google Image”-lots of good photos and you can see different ways they are eaten.

Enjoy Healthy Breakfast Day!!
